There’s just something magical about Christmas morning. I don’t know about you, but I honestly don’t care if there’s a big shiny box under the tree with my name on it. What makes me tear up every time are the little things. The crookedly wrapped surprise that my kids have been dying to give me, the glitter-covered card that leaves sparkles everywhere (for months..seriously, how do you get rid of glitter once and for all??), or the silly mug they spotted at the store and decided I HAD to have it.

Here’s the thing. The best gifts for moms don’t have to be expensive or complicated. In fact, the sweetest ones usually come straight from the kids. Maybe with a little behind-the-scenes help from dad, but regardless, gifts from the kids are the most meaningful ones.
If you’re looking for Christmas gift ideas for mom that are thoughtful, budget-friendly, and perfect for kids to help with, I’ve got the ultimate list for you. Some are handmade, some are store-bought, and all of them will make mom feel appreciated and loved.

1. Kid-Made Coupon Book
This is hands-down one of my favorites!
It doesn’t take much.
A few pieces of paper, crayons, and maybe some stickers…and you’ve got yourself a “coupon book” for mom. Think simple things like “one free cuddle”, “clean my room without complaining”, “movie night together.”
Even if the kids can’t write yet, they can draw pictures! Or dad or another adult can help them with jotting ideas down.
It’s sweet, it’s personal, and it costs absolutely nothing.
2. Cozy Socks or Slippers
Okay, hear me out. I know socks aren’t glamorous, BUT when your 5 year old proudly hands you a pair with reindeer dancing across them, your heart melts a little. Slippers, fuzzy socks, even the silly ones from the dollar store. It’s less about the actual socks and more about the fact that they picked it just for you.
3. A Handprint or Footprint Craft
Messy? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
Paint little hands or feet, stamp them onto paper, write the year and frame it.
Every year you’ll look back and say “were their hands really that tiny?”
Another option are store-bought print kits. They come in all kinds of forms: stepping stones for the garden, salt dough for ornaments, hardening clay for placards…
All of these options are perfect gifts for mom because they’re personal and make great keepsakes!
4. Handmade Ornaments
To piggyback off of our last idea, you can quickly and inexpensively make a box full of handmade ornaments. Salt dough, popsicle sticks, beads, or a clear ornament filled with glitter and a school photo.
Ornaments made by kids are treasures. Every year when you pull them out of the box, you’ll remember exactly how old they were when they made them.
5. A DIY Coffee Mug Gift
Moms loves mugs. It’s just a fact. Let the kids pick one (even if it says something totally random or makes zero sense in the moment). Add a packet of cocoa, tea, or coffee inside along with some of her favorite candies.
You can customize this gift any number of ways. Add nice jewelry for a really leveled up surprise OR just have your kids make handmade jewelry or keychains.
Bonus points for dad if you have a fresh bottle of seasonal creamer in the fridge for later!
6. A “Day with Mom” Jar
Take a jar, fill it with slips of paper that say things like “bake cookies”, “watch a movie”, “play a game”. You get the idea.
Instead of a coupon book, create a jar with the same ideas.
Another option is to fill a jar with favorite memories with mom.
Have kids write on slips of paper their favorite things about mom, their favorite memories with her, or just what they appreciate most.
Write these out for little kids that can’t write themselves yet.
Either way you make this gift, any mom will treasure it forever.
7. Candles or Bath Goodies
The best gifts are the things you know someone will love but will probably not buy for themselves.
Christmas gifts for mom are no different.
Higher end lotions, candles, and bath salts make a great gift that almost any mom would love, but will probably not splurge on for herself.
8. Family Photo Gift
I’m guilty of not framing photos I’ve paid so much money for until years down the road.
Print your favorite family photo and frame it.
A DIY option is to have kids create a frame using popsicle sticks and cardboard.
Want a more leveled up option?
Have your favorite family photo printed on canvas or wood for a gift that will hang in your home and bring her joy for years to come.
9. A Pretty Notebook or Journal
This doesn’t have to be expensive. A new journal or planner is super exciting, but most moms have so many of these already. My firm belief is that a mama can never have too many notebooks, planners, or office supplies for that matter.
Add a beautiful new pen, or even a fountain pen if you want to be super fancy, and you’ve got a really thoughtful, beautiful gift.
10. Sweet Treats
Listen to me. I don’t know a single woman that doesn’t have a sweet tooth. Bake cookies or brownies for a DIY gift or simply buy her her favorite sweet treats.
11. A Cozy Blanket
We did this for a loved one a few years ago that was going through cancer treatment.
You can have blankets made (Walmart does this or go through a small business on Etsy) with personal photos printed on them.
If this seems like too much effort, that’s okay too! You can buy a cozy blanket as a last minute gift for mom almost anywhere. Surprisingly, I’ve found some of my absolute favorite blankets at Marshalls and TJ Maxx.
12. A Family Calendar
Similar to the cozy blanket idea, you can have a calendar custom printed with your own family portraits!
Paper calendars like this are amazing, or you can splurge on a digital calendar instead. Just make sure you are ready to commit to a small monthly charge if you want all of the extras that go with a digital calendar. The one we personally own requires a monthly membership to add meal plans and photos.
This brings me back to my paper roots, there really just is no replacement for a good old paper calendar hanging on the wall!
At the end of the day, moms don’t want fancy. We don’t need expensive jewelry or gadgets. What we really want is to see that someone remembered us around the holidays. Remembered to pick up something small or remembered to help our kids put together a thoughtful gift. Take the pressure off of finding the perfect gift and understand that the mom in your life doesn’t expect perfect, she expects thoughtful. Any one of the ideas listed here will make sure you hit the mark!
