Cradle Cap Remedies
What is cradle cap?
Cradle cap is a very common skin condition that appears during the first year.
You may notice dry skin on your child’s scalp that changes to flaky yellow or white scales.
No one knows exactly what causes cradle cap. Some say it is caused by hormones passed to the baby before birth that cause overactive sebaceous glands, while others say a yeast imbalance causes it.
It is not caused by poor hygiene, allergies, or an infection, so don’t feel bad if your baby develops it.
You may also notice a rash. Cradle cap does not only show up on babies’ heads. It can also appear on your baby’s ears, face, or groin area. Though it typically appears on a baby’s scalp.
If you are concerned about your child’s skin, consult your pediatrician.
Don’t worry about your baby feeling uncomfortable. Even though the cradle cap looks like it does, it does not cause pain or itchiness.
Cradle cap is harmless and will go away on its own, but you can expedite the process by doing something very simple.
Many mamas search for the perfect cradle cap shampoo and cradle cap brush. I will share exactly what worked for my son.
Cradle Cap VS. Eczema
There are a few differences between cradle cap and eczema.
Unlike cradle cap, eczema is itchy and very uncomfortable.
Eczema also shows up during the first year of life. It is estimated that 1 in 10 people will develop eczema during their lifetime.
Numerous factors can cause eczema.
- Immune System: The immune system reacts to triggers by thinking the irritants are foreign invaders. As a defense, the immune system creates inflammation.
- Genes: Some things are inherited. When my daughter was diagnosed with eczema our pediatric dermatologist told us that if the family has a history of allergies, asthma, or eczema then a child is more likely to develop eczema.
- Environment: Some things in your environment can trigger eczema. Some common environmental triggers are smoke, fragrances, fabric, pet dander, dry air, and high humidity.
Cradle cap is usually oily and eczema feels more dry.
Cradle cap can last for a few months and eczema may or may not go away.
How I Got Rid of Cradle Cap After 2 Baths
The bye-bye cradle cap bundle makes it very easy to remove cradle cap. The bundle includes everything you need, and I must say the product name fits very well.
While my son was in the tubby, I squeezed a small drop of the gel onto the silicone brush. (By the way, using a silicone brush is essential. It is so much more gentle than typical baby brushes.)
I gently applied it to his scalp by brushing it on in circular motions. This magical gel is made of naturally derived Zinc Pyrithione, which is key to diminishing flaking, scaling, redness, and all the other frustrating symptoms that come along with cradle cap.
Next, I rinsed his hair. Then used the hair + body wash to gently clean his body. This is our go-to bath product for shampoo and body wash. We have been using this head + body wash for years now.
Side note. When my daughter was a baby she was diagnosed with eczema, so we needed products that were clean and gentle. Tubby Todd products have been the biggest blessing.
So when we had our son, whether he had eczema or not, we knew we were going to continue to use Tubby Todd products on his skin too.
After tubby time, we lathered All Over Ointment on his damp head. We were already big fans of the All Over Ointment.
Besides treating cradle cap, it also does a great job managing eczema-prone skin or any dry spots or irritated areas that arise on your little one’s skin.
It is made up of colloidal oatmeal, so you know your little darling is in great hands.
I repeated this process one more time and his cradle cap was gone.
I knew that cradle cap would go away on its own, but I wanted to get rid of it much sooner. I had high expectations before the bye-bye cradle cap bundle arrived, but I was shocked that it went away after just two baths.
