When to Start Packing Hospital Bag
The LAST thing you want to worry about when you are going into labor is packing your hospital bag. The answer to this question depends on your circumstance and who you ask.
I am a planner and a type A personality so I had my bag packed and ready by 34 weeks. If you are high-risk or carrying twins, you probably want to be packed by 35 weeks.
I would not wait until 38 weeks or after to pack your hospital bag. Avoid packing at the last minute! Nothing good comes from that.
Hospital Bag for Mom
1. Nipple Cream
This is at the top of my list because as a first-time mama, I did not think about the possibility of my baby having latching issues. She was born with a tongue and lip tie so feeding was extremely challenging initially. My nipples were SORE.
Even if babies don’t have latching issues, it is also normal for mamas to experience tenderness and discomfort as they get used to breastfeeding.
So as a second-time mama, you bet my nipple cream is coming with me to the hospital! This nipple cream was so soothing. Order through this link and use the code “BUMPTOBUSY10” to earn 10% off. Do not wait until you need nipple cream to buy it!
2. Slippers
We all know the hospital isn’t the most comfortable place in the world to be. So bring some comfort items with you to make your stay a little bit more cozy. Like slippers!
You’ll appreciate having a warm pair of slippers when walking around in your hospital room.
I would bring a pair of slippers you don’t care about. I wasn’t interested in bringing the slippers I wear at home to the hospital and bringing them back home to wear. Yucky.
3. Toiletries
Remember to pack anything you use to clean or groom yourself! If you end up having a longer hospital stay, you may decide to hold off on taking a shower. That’s what I did.
Here are some toiletries to remember to pack:
- Dry shampoo (especially if you plan on waiting until you’re home to shower)
- Brush
- Hair ties
- Toothbrush & toothpaste
- Facial cleansing wipes
- Lotion
- Deodorant
4. Entertainment
A hospital stay ALWAYS feels like an eternity. Bring your own entertainment. Maybe you want to pack your iPad to stream your favorite shows and movies. Or books to keep your mind busy. Whatever floats your boat!
I find that having a distraction is extremely helpful. Especially while you’re waiting for your baby to make his or her big debut.
The hospital TV just wasn’t cutting it for me. I need my shows.
5. Bluetooth Speaker
Here is another essential on the hospital bag checklist for mom and baby.
Don’t underestimate the power of music! It can help reduce pain, distract, help regulate breathing, and more! Check out this article for more benefits of music during labor.
I suggest making a labor playlist that you can play through a Bluetooth speaker.
6. Chargers
Don’t leave your chargers at home! If you have a charger with an extra-long cord, bring that one! Who knows how close the outlet will be to your bed.
7. Nursing Bra
Plan ahead and get your hands on a great nursing bra.
I am obsessed with these bras. I used them while breastfeeding my daughter and plan to use them with my son too.
These nursing bras are light, cozy, AND make breastfeeding a breeze.
I continued to use them after breastfeeding because they are super comfortable.

8. Comfy Clothes
After labor, you want to have the most comfortable clothes handy. You deserve it! Rest in comfort mama.
9. Blanket
Hospitals can be cold. I was induced when I had my daughter and I remember very clearly waiting in the hospital bed watching tv and WISHING I brought my blanket from home. I won’t mess up this time around.

1. Coming Home Outfit
I am a sucker for buying custom baby clothes on Etsy. They have such unique and adorable options.
You will have no problem finding the perfect coming home outfit for your baby. Whether you are having a boy or girl.
How precious is this one? Besides the fact that it is cute, it is ALSO comfortable.
2. Birth Announcement Sign
Your hospital may have a photographer offer to take photos of your baby and sell them to you. Mine did and let me just tell you how ridiculously expensive they were.
Buy a birth announcement sign and take your own precious photos.
3. Baby Blanket
The hospital will likely give you a baby blanket, but I like to bring our favorite one from home.
4. Clothes
I like to be prepared so I pack a few outfits for my little darling. As a second-time mom, I know just how explosive blowouts can be.
I’d rather have a few extra outfits than not enough!
I highly recommend bringing clothes that are a combination of 0-3 months. You don’t know how big your baby will be.
5. Car seat
Obviously this won’t come INTO the hospital with you, but it should travel TO the hospital with you! Have your car seat installed before you go into labor.
