Let’s talk. Here are ALL the things you need to know before welcoming your second baby!
So many people (myself included) try to plan out life events perfectly. Things don’t always happen when you want them to. AND things may even happen sooner than you hoped.
A baby is a huge blessing. Many mamas panic and anxiously want to know what the transition is like going from one to two kids. Is it harder than going from 0 to 1? This is something I wanted to know too! So I am with you.
Let’s put your anxiety to rest and talk about everything you need to know before having your second baby.

What You Need To Know Before Having Your Second Baby
1. There Is No Perfect Time
I have learned that there is no perfect time for ANYTHING in life. You probably already have an ideal time in mind to try for baby number two, but things don’t always happen on our timeline. It may take longer than you are hoping. If that’s the case, don’t get discouraged (I know it’s easier said than done).
Or maybe baby number two is coming sooner than expected. However big or small the age gap is between your little ones, babies are a blessing. You will be SO glad when they arrive safe and sound in your arms. Nothing in life is perfect. Whenever it happens, it will be great AND it will be a beautiful blessing for your whole family.
2. This Will Be an Adjustment Period… for Everybody
This will be an adjustment period for EVERYONE in the family. You and your partner will have to figure out new roles and responsibilities. I have always been the one to take care of my daughter’s bedtime routine. Before the arrival of our son, my husband and I began to alternate putting our daughter to bed. This way it wasn’t such a HUGE shock for her when our baby boy arrived.
Your little one will have to adjust to sharing you. Your firstborn may exhibit a regression. They may begin acting younger to get your attention. If your toddler is potty trained, they may begin having accidents. They may also ask for a pacifier. You get the picture. During this time, give both children quality time the best you can.
3. Your Heart is Big Enough
You will have just as much love for your second baby as you do for your first!
Before we started trying for our second, my husband jokingly said, “We made the perfect baby the first time.” Of course, our hearts are just as full.
I promise you will feel like your second baby is just as perfect as your first. Just as precious. Ultimately, you will feel just as blessed.
As I mentioned before, this will be a big adjustment period for your whole family. You will figure it out and get into the swing of the new normal. Give yourself grace and accept help. It takes a village!
4. Pregnancy Will Be a Bit More Exhausting
Ask any toddler mama how their second pregnancy is going. I bet they will tell you the second pregnancy is way more exhausting!
Moms don’t get a break. If you are already chasing after a baby, toddler, or older baby, it will be much more difficult to take a nap in the middle of the day. Or even lay down and get some rest. Your daily responsibilities won’t stop and it can be really difficult to complete basic tasks during the first trimester.
With that being said, FINDING time to rest and relax is super important. So try to find a good time during the day to fit this into your daily routine. I used to nap when my toddler napped and it was MUCH NEEDED!
It is also worth mentioning that every pregnancy is different. It is quite possible that your nausea level is different this time around. With my son, I had more frequent morning sickness.
5. Your Labor Will Most Likely Be Shorter
You have done this before so your body knows EXACTLY what to do. Your uterus and cervix remember everything birth entails.
You were probably told to stay home until the contractions are 5 minutes apart. If this is your second rodeo, you’ll want to head to the hospital sooner. If you struggled to arrive at the hospital on time the first time around, you’ll definitely want to arrive sooner!
6. You’ve Got This in the Bag
You’ve been through this before so you know what to expect and how to prepare yourself. You’ve got this mama! You will do great. Congratulations!
