The Best Postpartum Must Haves
As a first time mom, I was so focused on delivering my baby, I did not give much thought about postpartum must haves. I wish I prepared a little more. The last thing you want to do after labor is run out or worry about what to buy to ease the pain. The hospital gave me:
- Ibuprofen
- Pads
- Peri Bottle
- Mesh Underwear
- Diapers (for my daughter)
Even though the hospital will send you home with some postpartum necessities, you are going to need a little more to help you heal.
What Do I Need Immediately Postpartum?
1. Frida Mom Witch Hazel Pads
Giving birth takes a toll on our bodies. These medicated pads help take care of the swelling and pain that comes along with vaginal delivery.
If you want these pads to feel cooler, you can keep them in fridge.
I highly recommend you bring these pads with you to the hospital! This is one of the best postpartum supplies that you are going to want.
2. Peri Bottle
I mentioned that the hospital gave me a peri bottle. I recommend buying one of your own. After your beautiful baby has arrived, you are going to quickly need a peri bottle. This is a great product for cleansing your sensitive area after labor. This makes using the bathroom after labor much easier. I remember when my nurse gave me my peri bottle, I thought it was the best thing ever. This is one of those life-changing postpartum products! If you take my advice and buy one of your own, that will be super helpful. You can even keep your bottles in different bathrooms of your house. So you will always have one to reach for.
3. Perineal Spray
Our beautiful babies are worth the physical pain of labor. During your postpartum days you will experience discomfort. Perineal spray is great for swelling, episiotomies, and even hemorrhoids. I trust this brand is 100%. There are no harmful chemicals. This bottle even sprays upside down!
4. Ice Packs
I loved these ice packs during my postpartum days. They are helpful when they are hot and when they are cold. Personally, I always kept mine cold. The best part about these ice packs are that they can be reused. Trust me when I say they are so worth it. These need to make it on your list of postpartum things to buy! This postpartum must have was used very frequently!

5. Mesh Underwear
These underwear are a postpartum must have! After having a baby, mesh underwear are SO comfortable! I love that these come in a 4-pack and that they are washable. These are one of the best postpartum essentials ever and need to make it on your postpartum list. I will admit that I wore mine for a good bit of time! After having a baby, you just want to feel comfortable again. Am I right?
6. Maxi Pads
Maxi Pads are definitely at the top of the postpartum needs list! In my opinion, these are the best postpartum pads. These postpartum must haves will also come in handy for your first postpartum period. You will use them all.
7. Nursing Pads
Whether or not you are a breastfeeding mama, you are going to need these nursing pads. As a first time mama, I had no idea that I would be leaking milk. Say what?! I was so happy with these nursing pads. I am obsessed with this brand. You never want to worry about leaking through your shirt. Buy these!
8. Bamboobies Soothing Nursing Pillows
I love the name of this brand. I love the product even more. A friend of mine recommended that I buy these. I was so grateful! My daughter had issues latching and as a result I was hurting big time! These serve as a cold compress. I stored them in the freezer and placed them in my nursing bra when I needed them. It gave me instant relief. They are also made from bamboo. So they are incredibly soft.
9. TheraPearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy Packs
Another friend of mine recommended that I buy these. I also loved these! If you suffer from engorgement, you need these! I had an over supply and these therapy packs were amazing. They can also be used hot to help with plugged ducts. If you need to signal your body to let-down more milk, these will partner with a pump to help your body do that.
10. Nursing Bra
I made the mistake of not buying a nursing bra soon enough. You are going to want to have a nursing bra ready once your little one has arrived. I bought my nursing bras from Soma and I love them! Once I started wearing them, I was kicking myself for not buying these sooner.
11. Nipple Cream
If you a breastfeeding mama, you are going to want to buy nipple cream. Trust me, you will need it. Regardless of whether or not your baby gets the hang of latching, your nipples will be a little sore at first. Having nipple cream takes away the discomfort. This cream is safe for you and baby. No need to wipe your nipple before a feeding. It does not contain petroleum, preservatives, and lanolin. This is one of those postpartum care products that people often forget about.
My daughter has difficulty latching due to having a tongue tie and a lip tie. This nipple cream was a HUGE relief.
FYI: The other amazing thing about this product is that it can also be used on lips, cuticles, or dry skin.
12. Sitz Bath
This is something I had no idea about until my nurse mentioned it to me. A sitz bath is when you sit in water up to your hips for 15-20 minutes. It helps with healing. I LOVED sitz baths during my postpartum days. Warm water does the trick! The most amazing thing about a sitz bath is that it is a free and is one of the greatest essentials for mom after birth. It is also a great way to relax.

13. Water
If you are a breastfeeding mama, you know how important it is to drink your water! Breastfeeding makes a lot of mamas so incredibly thirsty.
Even if you are not breastfeeding, getting your recommended water intake is always important!
Take care of yourself. You deserve it.
14. Delivery
When I say delivery I am talking about food delivery. The last thing you are going to want to do is cook. You’re probably not going to have a whole lot of time to cook. Take advantage of your local restaurants and have food delivered. Treat yourself!
If your family lives close, they can always drop off meals to your family that you can easily heat up. My family did that for us and it was so appreciated. I enjoy eating a home cooked meal. I just didn’t have a lot of time since taking care of a newborn is a full-time job. It was so nice to just pop our dinner in the oven and heat it up. In my honest opinion, this is the best postpartum must have!
15. Stool Softener
You may already have this around the house if your doctor recommended this during your pregnancy. My doctor did.
Going to the bathroom after labor can be painful. A stool softener is one of the most helpful after birth essentials for mom. This is one of the postpartum must haves your nurse will quickly remind you about.
16. Maternity Pants
Yep. You are going to want to continue wearing your maternity pants. I lived in my maternity leggings for the longest time. Why can’t all clothes be that comfortable?
17. Postpartum Underwear
Comfort is essential. Buy these comfy cozy underwear! It comes in a 5 pack.
What do you put in a postpartum care package?
Let’s chat some more about postpartum must haves. I think the best postpartum care package consists of:
- A big water bottle. I was thirsty literally all the time!
- Gift cards to local restaurants or Door Dash gift cards.
- Some healthy snacks.
- A bottle of champagne to celebrate the new bundle of joy.
- A gift card to watch the baby while mom relaxes or naps.
